benefits and disadvantages of remote work

Global Forum on Productivity (GFP) analyzed how remote work influences productivity and well-being among managers and workers in 25 countries during COVID-19. As our insight today, we have highlighted the main benefits and disadvantages of remote work according to the managers.

Benefits of remote work:
The majority of the managers say that (1) productivity increased because workers are more concentrated and commit fewer errors at home. Additionally, managers felt that the remote work practices have (2) broadened the pool of new talent and (3) made recruiting easier.

Challenges of remote work:
Managers saw that the main challenge of remote work is (1) team work. Lack of presence brings difficulties in communication and coordination of teams. Managers also saw that (2) employees in the remote setting identify themselves less with the firm that they work for. Finally, 70% of managers believe that (3) employee training is harder in remote work settings.

The sudden shift to remote work has created both positive and negative impacts on the performance of the companies. However, the study concluded that overall remote or hybrid work positively influences both firm performance and individual well-being.

At Glue, we have been on a mission to help companies to succeed in remote work with proper tools and practices. VR is an efficient tool that makes virtual collaboration between colleagues as great as face-to-face, which provides an effective way to overcome the challenges that this study also highlighted.
